Hong Kong Living

Hong Kong residential property rentals are exceedingly high and totally incomprehensible when comparing to rentals in our home countries. The accommodation is mostly apartments within high rise developments which usually provide facilities such as a swimming pool, gym and children's playground. Lowrise buildings comprise of three stories only but generally do not have any facilities. There are duplex apartments within developments. The ultimate is a townhouse as they are more
spacious with a terrace and garden. Of course the rental is relevant to the standard of housing. A free standing house is virtually non existent. The terminology for an apartment is often referred to as a simplex, an apartment of two levels is a duplex and three levels a triplex.  A block of houses joined by a common wall is a townhouse.  It is very hard to accept that the exorbitant rental prices do not always provide the basic appliances of a stove (referred to as a cooker), air conditioners, light fittings, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine & dryer. The size is measured in square feet which is not always the net usable area as the measurement often includes the common area such as foyer and lift area. It is a luxury to have an apartment with a large balcony and absolutely a rare find to have a garden. The transition for westerners especially Americans coming from such an immense amount of space and the high standard of homes find it hard initially to adapt to downsizing but once settled and the understanding of the Hong Kong way of life takes effect it all seems not so devastating!
